Archangels Azrael and Magdalena

When Your Heart is Grieving, Call Upon These Archangels

September 14, 20266 min read

There are times in our lives when there simply aren't words for what we're feeling.

When someone we love passes.

When a relationship ends.

When a chapter of our life closes before we're ready.

Or when we look at what is happening in the world around us and feel grief for people we may never have even met.

During these times, there are two Archangels I have come to call upon for their loving assistance:

Archangel Azrael and Archangel Magdalena

When Azrael Came for My Grandmother

Years ago, my maternal grandmother was living in a nursing home just down the street from where I lived at the time.

She had Alzheimer's Disease and, by then, it felt as though she was basically just existing.

One day, I went to visit her, and it was so sad.

She had no idea what was going on around her and would only eat M&M candies.

Many years earlier, I had learned about Archangel Azrael, the Angel of Death, and his role in assisting souls with their transition home.

So, as I sat with my grandmother that day, I told her that she had lived a long life and that, if she was ready, it was okay to go home to God.

Then I asked Archangel Azrael to please help her with her transition home when the time was right.

The moment I asked, I felt a hand on my left shoulder.

And immediately...I knew Azrael was there.

There was no question in my mind.

I knew he had heard me.

And I knew he was there for her.

About a week later, I received a call from the nursing home telling me that my grandmother had passed.

In that moment, I thanked Archangel Azrael for being there and helping her with her transition home.

Azrael Isn't Only There for Those Who Are Leaving

Over the years, I've called upon Azrael many times when friends or family members were approaching their transition or had passed.

But I've also called upon him for those of us who remain.

Because Azrael doesn't only assist those who are crossing over.

He also brings comfort and healing to those who are grieving.

And grief can take so many forms.

We grieve the death of someone we love.

But we can also grieve the death of a relationship.

The loss of a job.

A friendship that has ended.

A dream that didn't unfold the way we hoped.

The person we used to be.

The life we thought we would have.

And sometimes, we grieve what we see happening within our communities and throughout our world.

Not every loss involves a physical death.

But the grief we experience can still be very real.

And Then I Met Magdalena

More recently, I was introduced to Archangel Magdalena, Azrael's twin flame.

Magdalena is the Lady of Mercy, and when I began connecting with her, her relationship with Azrael made so much sense to me.

Azrael carries the tremendous responsibility of assisting souls who are crossing over and bringing comfort to those who are grieving.

Magdalena brings a soft, nurturing, compassionate Divine Feminine energy that beautifully complements and balances his work.

Together, I experience them as an extraordinary presence to call upon during times of loss, grief, transition, and emotional renewal.

And once I met Magdalena, it seemed perfectly natural to begin calling upon both of them.

Grief Doesn't Have a Timetable

One of the things I think we sometimes forget is that grief doesn't follow a schedule.

We may think we "should" be over something by now.

We may wonder why something we thought we'd healed suddenly hurts again.

A song, a photograph, a place, a smell, or an anniversary can unexpectedly bring an old loss right back into our awareness.

That doesn't necessarily mean we've gone backward.

Sometimes another layer of our heart is simply ready to be loved.

And we don't always have to figure out how to heal that layer by ourselves.

We can ask for help.

Calling Upon Azrael & Magdalena

If you are experiencing grief right now—whether from the passing of someone you love, the ending of a relationship, a change in your life, or even the heaviness you may be feeling from circumstances in the world—I invite you to spend a few quiet moments with Azrael and Magdalena.

Place your hand over your heart, take several slow, gentle breaths, and see your heart surrounded by a beautiful white, purple, and orange light.

And say:

Beloved Archangels Azrael and Magdalena,

Please surround me with your loving presence.

Bring comfort to the places within my heart that are grieving.

Help me gently release the pain I am ready to release while honoring the love, experiences, and wisdom that will always remain.

Where there is sorrow, bring comfort.

Where there is heaviness, bring peace.

Where something has ended, help me lovingly open to renewal when I am ready.

And if someone I love has crossed over, please surround them with your love and assist them on their journey home.

Help me know that I do not have to walk through grief alone.

Thank you

And so it is.

Then simply allow yourself to receive.

You don't have to force yourself to feel better.

You don't have to make the sadness disappear.

And you don't have to have all the answers.

Just invite Azrael and Magdalena to sit with you in that sacred space.

Perhaps you'll feel a presence.

Maybe you'll experience warmth around your heart or a comforting energy around you.

You may receive a message through one of your Clairs.

Or perhaps you'll simply feel a little more peaceful than you did before.

Remember:

Ask. Allow. Notice.

We Can Honor What Was While Still Allowing What Comes Next

Grief and healing don't require us to forget.

We don't have to erase someone or something from our hearts in order to move forward.

We can treasure the love.

We can carry the memories.

We can gather the wisdom.

And, when we're ready, we can allow the pain surrounding those memories to begin to soften.

Perhaps that is one of the greatest gifts Azrael and Magdalena can offer us:

helping us understand that letting go of the pain doesn't mean letting go of the love.

With everything happening in our world right now, I felt it was especially important to share these two beautiful Archangels with you.

If your heart is grieving today—for someone you loved, something you've lost, or even for our world—perhaps you don't need to know exactly how to heal it.

For today...maybe it's enough simply to ask for a little help carrying it.

Love & Light,

Joelle St. Germaine

P.S. If you know someone who is grieving right now, you can also call upon Azrael and Magdalena on their behalf, asking that they surround your loved one with comfort, compassion, mercy, and peace while always honoring their highest good and free will.
